59th Battalion, Pte Philias Carriere

Museum Blog - May 2016

This spring marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Verdun, which resulted in an approximated 700,000 casualties.  In researching the history of our local Regiment, I discovered that Private Philias Carriere, a former member of the 59th Battalion Stormont & Glengarry,  enlisted  in August 1915 and was sent overseas in March 1916. It was not uncommon for Members of the 59th to be separated from their original units and stationed elsewhere in the army, depending on need. Carriere spoke French, and so was sent to the Verdun front, where he was killed in the October of 1916.
