Centennial Commemoration of the First World War

On August 4, 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany after the latter invaded Belgium.  Even though Canada had its independence from Great Britain it did not have control over its foreign policy. As a result, Canada was automatically entered into the war.

Over the course of the war more than 700 young men from the United Counties would serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Europe.

On Sunday, August 3, 2014, the Cornwall Community Museum and the SD&G Highlanders Regimental Museum, will be holding a small ceremony at the Cornwall Armouries, starting at 2pm, to mark the beginning of the First World War for Canada. Members of the public are welcome to attend and view the Regimental Museum as well as a new exhibit about the First World War. The exhibit will then be on display at the Cornwall Community Museum from Wednesday, August 6 to the end of the season.
